Stronger Together: Building a Supportive Network as a Military Mom

Becoming a mom is a transformative experience, but it comes with unique challenges for military spouses. From frequent deployments to PCS moves and the daily demands of military life, the journey can feel overwhelming. Building a strong support network is not just helpful—it’s essential for navigating these challenges and maintaining your well-being.

My Journey as a Military Mom

As a military mom of five, I know firsthand the importance of finding a community. My husband and I learned we were expecting our first child the day he left for a nine-month deployment. He returned to meet our daughter two weeks after she was born. Those months were filled with joy, uncertainty, and growth. I quickly realized that having a strong support system was crucial—not only for a successful delivery but also for my mental health.

In this post, I’ll share tips for building a supportive network, highlight resources available to military families, and reflect on what helped me thrive during this unique yet challenging season.

The Power of Community

Military life can sometimes feel isolating, especially when your partner is deployed. Finding your tribe is one of the most impactful steps you can take.

  • Seek Out Other Military Moms: Connecting with moms who understand your experience can provide comfort, advice, and camaraderie. I connected with moms through birthing classes held on post.
  • Join Spouse Organizations: Groups like the Military Spouse Network or local spouse clubs are excellent places to meet others and access resources.
  • Engage Online: Social media groups and forums can connect you with military moms worldwide. These platforms are especially helpful during PCS moves or deployments.

Building Strong Relationships

It’s not always easy to reach out, but being proactive can make all the difference.

  • Attend Events and Volunteer: Military events, base activities, and volunteer opportunities are great ways to meet others.
  • Accept Help: One of the hardest lessons I learned was accepting help when offered. Those small gestures made a huge difference, whether it was a friend bringing dinner or someone watching my baby for an hour.
    • The best experience I remember was meeting my doula during an on-post birthing class. She was the best avenue of support while preparing to deliver my daughter while my soldier was deployed

Utilizing Military Resources

The military offers many resources to support families, from financial assistance to parenting programs.

  • TRICARE Benefits: Take advantage of comprehensive medical coverage for prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum needs.
  • Classes and Workshops: Many bases offer free or affordable childbirth, parenting, and financial planning classes.
  • Paternity Leave: Service members may be eligible for paternity leave. Check your spouse’s branch-specific guidelines.

Self-Care and Preparation

Taking care of yourself is just as important as preparing for your baby’s arrival.

  • Stock Up on Essentials: Before my daughter was born, I stocked up on groceries, toiletries, and baby supplies to reduce stress after delivery.
  • Prioritize Self-Care: Even with a newborn, I made time for small acts of self-care, like enjoying a quiet cup of coffee or taking a short walk.
    • My favorite thing to do was to take a nap! Rest is so crucial while growing a little one. Be sure to listen to your body and recharge when needed.

You Are More Than Capable
